Work started on the tower in the fall of 1740 by the Spanish to guard the Matanzas Inlet which was at the mouth of the Matanzas River and could provide a backdoor to the City Of St. Augustine. St. Augustine’s primary defense system was centered around Castillo de San Marcos, the main fort in the now historic district of St. Augustine.

There was so much character in this shell that I had to stop and take notice. I shot its front side and then turned it over and shot the back side. Looks like a heart, not just in shape, but possibly with the valves pumping life. This shell hasn’t seen much action in years, maybe centuries!

My fascination with lighthouses goes back over 15 years when I started collecting them. It wasn’t until this year that we actually drove over to the St. Marks Wildlife Refuge that I finally checked this off my bucket list. It was a two-fer because we went over looking for the American Flamingo.

Staying in the Tiny House is much different than staying in the main house. Even though you have your own private room and bathroom in the main house, staying in the Tiny House gives you a sense of independence that you don’t feel in the main house.
