Song Lyric Sunday – Country Thinking

This week Jim Adams has prompted us with choosing a song pertaining to Brain | Mind | Think for this week’s Song Lyric Sunday. I chose a couple songs this week. “I Think I’ll Just Stay Here and Drink” by Merle Haggard and “She Thinks My Tractor’s Sexy” by Kenny Chesney. Both are completely different.

Country music is close to my heart and this week I give you a good old fashioned drinking song released in 1980 and a fun fantasy song released in 1999. The first is about love that doesn’t exist anymore and the second is about a guy who uses the sex appeal of his tractor to get the girl.

Song Facts:

  • Written by Merle Haggard.
  • Released on October 25, 1980
  • The second single from his album Back to the Barrooms.
  • It was his 26th #1 country hit and stayed in the top spot for only one week with a total of 12 weeks on the US Hot Country Songs Billboard chart. It reached #29 on the Canadian RPM Country Tracks.
  • During my party days, as soon as the first lyric was spoken by a cover band in a bar, I left my chair, found a partner and hit the dance floor. It is a perfect two-step song. It became an anthem in the 80s.

I Think I’ll Just Stay Here and Drink

Could be holding you tonight
Could be doing wrong or start doing right
You don't care about what I think
I think I'll just stay here and drink
Hey, putting you down, don't square no deal
Least you'll know the way I feel
Take all the money in the bank
I think I'll just stay here and drink
Listen close and you can hear
That loud jukebox playing in my ear
Ain't no woman gon' change the way I think
I think I'll just stay here and drink
Hurtin' me know don't mean a thing
Since love ain't here, don't feel no pain
My mind ain't nothing but a total blank
I think I'll just stay here and drink

She Thinks My Tractor’s Sexy

Plowing these fields in the hot summer sun
Over by the gate, yonder here she comes
With a basket full of chicken
And a big cold jug of sweet tea
I make a little room and she climbs on up
I open up the throttle and stir a little dust
Look at her face, she ain't a foolin' me
She thinks my tractor's sexy
It really turns her on
She's always starin' at me
While I'm chuggin' along
She likes the way it's pulling
While it's tillin' up the land
She's even kinda crazy ?bout my farmers tan
She's the only one who really
Understands what gets me
She thinks my tractor's sexy
We ride back and forth till we run out of light
Take it to the barn, put it up for the night
Climb up in the loft, sit and talk with the radio on
She says she's got a dream and I ask what it is
She wants a little farm and a yard full of kids
And one more teeny weenie ride before I take her home
She thinks my tractor's sexy
It really turns her on
She's always starin' at me
While I'm chuggin' along
She likes the way it's pulling
While it's tillin' up the land
She's even kinda crazy ?bout my farmers tan
She's the only one who really
Understands what gets me
She thinks my tractor's sexy
She ain't into cars or pick up trucks
But if it runs like a deer, man her eyes light up
She thinks my tractor's sexy
It really turns her on
She's always starin' at me
While I'm chuggin' along
She likes the way it's pulling
While it's tillin' up the land
She's even kinda crazy ?bout my farmers tan
She's the only one who really
Understands what gets me
She thinks my tractor's sexy

      • It’s been raining for days here in Jax. I’ll take it compared to what my sister is dealing with in Texas. 10 inches of snow and electricity going off and on (controlled) for the past 3 days. I can deal with our stuff here. It was in the 40’s last night and I’m not complaining! πŸ™‚
