Bird Weekly Round-Up – Week #19

There are over 200 species of owls in the world and most are solitary and nocturnal. They have built-in night vision to see and capture their prey such as small mammals, rodents, insects and other birds. They are divided into two families. The true owl family (Strigidae) and the barn-owl family (Tytonidae). A group of owls are called a parliament.

Bird Weekly Round-Up – Week #18

When we learn the English alphabet, we are taught, “A” is for apple. This week, “A” is for Anhinga, Avocet, American this and Australian & African that. Then there were the use of the scientific names of our avian favs that took the “A” right out of the box.

Bird Weekly Round-Up – Week #17

Y’all are making it hard for me to choose a bird of the week so I’m not going to but will showcase one bird from each blogger. We had a record 16 entries plus mine this week! Woohoo! Everyone is getting a showcase this week!

Bird Weekly Round-Up – Week #16

Week #16 challenge was Short legged birds. Having short legs myself, I can appreciate these birds who have to take short quick steps to get where they need to go on the ground. Unfortunately, I don’t have the ability to fly so my short little legs is all I got! We enjoyed a lot of song birds and some fine exotic birds (okay, maybe exotic to me). It’s funny how those in other countries find the birds in North America to be exotic when we think the same of their birds.

Bird Weekly Round-Up – Week #15

Week #15 challenge was Birds with Green Feathers. Green is defined by mixing the two primary colors of blue and yellow which we all learned in grade school. Along with blue & purple, it is considered a cool color whereas, red, orange and yellow are warm colors. Well, there were some COOL birds shared this week! Did you know that green is the second most favorite color just after blue. Green is associated with the color of peace. It is the color of life, renewal, nature and energy.

Bird Weekly Round-Up – Week #14

Week #14 challenge was Flocks. We had some wonderful entries of birds I am well versed in seeing and so many that I’ve never seen before that included all kinds of shorebirds, turkeys, ducks, geese, pelicans, gannets, lorikeets, cedar waxwings, magpies, cockatoos & parrots from Australia…and PUFFINS. My dream bird! Puffins! PLUS – Razorbills!

Bird Weekly Round-Up – Week #13

Some species like the white geese will become aggressive if you feed them. On more than one occasion, this has happened to us. The Florida State Fair Authority in Tampa had to have them removed from the grounds because they were attacking people getting out of their cars at the Administrative Building. The Florida Fish & Wildlife relocated them to a different location.

Bird Weekly Round-Up – Week #12

I think we all take Seagulls for granted because they are everywhere. From the seaside to the landfills. Along the beaches and in the Walmart parking lot. They are opportunistic birds! We had a wonderful array of gulls in this week’s challenge including several I have never seen before.

Bird Weekly Round-Up – Week #11

I have to make mention of one of the coolest things this week and that is the Snowy Owl. The bird in my photo and in Beth’s photo is the same bird. I mean…the exact same bird. Mine taken in Jacksonville and her’s taken in Georgia at the end of 2013, beginning of 2014. We didn’t know each other until this year.

Bird Weekly Round-Up – Week #10

Week #10 challenge was Yellow or Orange Legged Birds. Lots of ducks and shorebirds, chickens and penguins, a loon and a Scarlet Ibis! Pelicans are my favorite bird…sorry for the prejudiceness, but they are and we had some people American White Pelicans adorn our monitors this week.
