Bird Weekly Round-Up – Week #44

Week #44 challenge was “F” Birds.

Disclaimer: If anyone has an issue with me using their photos in the round ups, please kindly let me know. I haven’t had anyone say anything, but I don’t want you to think I’m using your photographs for personal gain. I’m here to show what great work you are doing with your photography by showing you off in these posts.

What was the most popular bird? Finches! Finches work together to combat other species when sharing a feeder with others. They can be quite combative amongst their own kind like sibling arguing over which piece of pizza each one will get. Marilyn demonstrated that quite well this week. Terri had to think outside the box and provided a Grosbeak even though this “Fake Finch” isn’t in the same family, the beaks are similar to those of the finches and they like visiting the feeders. I’m giving her a pass this week as she has just started settling into her new home and doesn’t have WiFi yet.

    • Thanks Terri! Today is the day for me to do Sunday Stills. I’m going to try to reverse my blogs so that I’m writing this on Sunday. Not sure if I can do it. Saturday seems to be the right day for me. 🙂

      • I’m totally fine, thanks for asking, Lisa! I felt a little more tired than usual Saturday night, then took Nyquil and went to bed. My arm is more sore than last time. Perfectly fine now.

  4. I considered adding a Cardinal who IS a Finch, but Cardinal is F-less and anyway, I had enough actual finches 🙂 They are beginning to come back now. I think — not sure but I think — the cowbirds are beginning to stray off in another direction. They are not really seed-eaters, at least not exclusively and they need bugs and other kinds of little protein. I’m trying to be patient.

    Have you been reading/hearing about the crazed migratory birds flying into houses and other places in desperate need of food? I’m haunted by the image. Beyond what I’m already doing, there’s not much else I can do for them. We just keep destroying their habitat. A “newly” planted forest with 3″ high trees is not a substitute for the old trees they all lived in and provides nothing in the way of food.

    • You are not wrong there. Our backyard is a forest and we live in a neighborhood. This neighborhood was built in the 50’s so we have mature trees. Many have come down in hurricanes and tropical storms. Some have been cut down because people think they no longer have curb appeal. My birds are missing their trees from new neighbors taking them out. We keep ours for the birds, plus the privacy from our neighbors. Best of both worlds. Our front yard doesn’t have any trees except 3 Crepe Myrtles and a Palm. They have plenty of cover in the backyard and nest like crazy. The cowbirds will move on. I’m guessing they dropped their eggs in someone’s nest and are moving on to the next victims. 🙂

  5. Well done everyone for so many Fantastic Fs! I thought I hadn’t anything, but of course I could have managed ‘flamingo’. Let’s see what I can dig out for ‘flight’
