“Stand by Your Man” by Tammy Wynette

This week for Song Lyric Sunday, Jim Adams has prompted us with Lean/Sit/Stand Songs.

In 1968, when I was only 3 years old, Tammy Wynette released Stand by Your Man which went to #1 on the country music charts where it stayed for 3 weeks. It was named #1 on CMT’s list of the Top 100 Country Music Songs. Stand by Your Man crossed over to peak at #19 on the UK Singles Chart. It is considered one of the most iconic songs in Country Music history and was selected to the Library of Congress in 2010 to the National Recording Registry. Wynette co-wrote the song with Bill Sherrill.

Tammy Wynette was married 5 times and married George Jones in February, 1969, just 5 months after this song was released.

Sometimes it's hard to be a woman
Giving all your love to just one man.
You'll have bad times
And he'll have good times,
Doin' things that you don't understand
But if you love him you'll forgive him,
Even though he's hard to understand
And if you love him oh be proud of him,
'Cause after all he's just a man
Stand by your man,
Give him two arms to cling to,
And something warm to come to
When nights are cold and lonely
Stand by your man,
And show the world you love him
Keep giving all the love you can
Stand by your man
Stand by your man,
And show the world you love him
Keep giving all the love you can
Stand by your man

How about Wilbur the Worm? In all fairness, he looks like a Charlie.

  1. I love this song. When I bought Lyle Lovett’s album I never expected to hear this version, which throws a whole different spin on it:
