Bird Weekly – Photo Challenge – Birds in color and Mono

Welcome to Week #25 of the Bird Weekly Photo Challenge. Week #25 challenge is a twofer or more! Share the same photo of the a bird of your choice in color, black & white or whatever monochrome color you choose. You can also use selective color or sepia tone. I use Photoshop for photo editing, but you can use the settings on your phone or whatever you choose. I honestly don’t know what is out there because I’ve been using photoshop for almost 20 years.

This week I wanted to show you different uses for the blocks that Word Press offers in case you have never used them before. I also wanted to prove that not every color image can be turned into black & white or have filters added to it and LOOK GOOD. Some of these photos you may have seen. I’m cheating a little this week as it has been busy with Thanksgiving yesterday.

Have fun discovering new blocks and techniques to show off your awesome photos. There are no wrong answers here and I can’t wait to see what birds you have this week!

Double-crested Cormorant

This block is called Image Compare. With this block, you can upload two images to get the effect above. The slider reveals each photo. You can do this with two completely different images with different subject matter as long as they are the same size. I chose to use it with providing the color version and a selective color black & white. I first saw this on a Square Challenge posted by Becky at Life of B. Becky hosts the Squares challenge that is a quarterly challenge. Next one comes up in January. She will announce the theme towards the end of December. Hope you will go visit her page and follow her. We have a lot of fun with Squares.

Snowy Egret

The block above is the Gallery block. I use this block type all the time, especially when i do the roundup.

Willet & Sanderling

This block is the Tiled Gallery which gives you a bit of a different layout.

Belted Kingfisher

With this block, I had to create my artwork as one image rather than uploading two separate images. This is the Media & Text block. The default font for the text is 36 point or large. I used 2 different font sizes to give you visual options. You can set the justification to right, left or center. You have the same editing abilities with changing the text color and making them bold or italic. You can also align the block the way you want it as well as I’ve shown a left justify and a right justify.

Limpkin

This block is a Collage. The Limpkin photos above were all taken in one photo shoot. I played around with these to make a nature photo (the last one), mono, grayscale, sepia and my favorite color purple. So unnatural looking but it was fun to go completely outside my comfort zone. Unfortunately, this block doesn’t always look in your designer the same as on your page.

Yellow-throated Warbler

This block is the group block. You can change the size, the distance between the photos called the gutter and even round the corners. If you want a caption for each photo, you have to turn on the toggle called Captions.

Slideshow

The slideshow block allows you to add multiple images that your readers can scroll through that are all the same size.

I’m not pretending to know all the ins and outs of WordPress but I’m having fun figuring them out. I just wanted to share some things that I have learned and hope you will try them if you haven’t already. Next week I will be back to my informative self with my birds.     • They are called snake birds by many locals. The Anhinga is called that as well and you will often see them in the same habitat where Anhingas can be found. Cormorants have a much larger range. I will feature them at some point again and talk about them. 🙂

  3. Gosh, I haven’t even mastered the Photoshop thing yet. Too much going on at the moment on the home front, not to mention Safari has thrown a wobbler and keeps asking me to sign in to WordPress, then won’t let me, so it’s back to Chrome 🤨 Great photos!

  4. You have been having fun! Lovely. How do you create the photos with a sliding line to change from one format to the other? What is the technique called so that I can look it up, please?

    • Hi Margaret! Yes, I had fun this week playing with the different blocks. That block is called Image Compare. If you click on the plus sign to bring up a new block and type Image Compare in the search bar, it will come up. Click on it and it will give you the two spots you can upload two different images. You have to have 2 files to have the difference. It doesn’t do that for you. I have my color image saved and then I disregard all the color and save that file. Let me know if you have any other questions. 🙂

  10. I liked the effect you used on the cormorants. Yes, I agree with you on photographing kingfishers. It’s fun to play with all the things the photo editing programs do. I just updated mine yesterday – Corel PaintShop Pro.

  11. Just an FYI, many of the functions do not work when looking at the post in Reader. I have been using my IPad App, Reader mostly, and the blocker editor options are not compatible. Not a new issue but most people, me included, didn’t check for things like this. 57% of my traffic is from the Reader app. I now check using my wife’s IPad since she has a different WP account. This allows me to see the site as other users will.

    Just thought I would let you know.

    • I appreciate that. I know there are all kinds of hangups in WP. My feature image almost never can be seen on a phone or tablet. That is why I usually put a paragraph in there about my feature image. It is a problem with my theme, but I like my theme so I live with it. I appreciate the info! 🙂

      • Themes are usually some kind of issue. I have had a WP site in some form for over 20 years, it’s nothing new. I think WP is on a push to make the code work across everything. The last 3 app updates included fixes for some things, but broke some others. They may be feeling the business squeeze like many others are now.

        I had been testing and keeping a long list of issues but stopped. I have a few business plans up for renewal in a month or so. In reality even the cost of the highest business plan is not expensive, things work for the most part, so… I’m now going anywhere.

        Thanks, and hope all is well by you. Life is continuing to be an adventure isn’t it LOL.

      • A list, wow! I just live with it and yes it isn’t that expensive. They need to stay competitive because new stuff comes out all the time. Im doing okay. Really busy with the Etsy shop and my dog is not doing well. All day has been a challenge. We haven’t been out birding in a while. Probably won’t until after the holiday rush is done with the shop. January! 😊

      • I’m stuck until January. New hip will keep me in, and I too have dog not doing well. 2020 can’t be gone fast enough. Of course 2021 will not be a miracle…but one needs a plan 😂😂 Hope all goes well for you, Ellen and I are lucky and do appreciate it, more now than ever.

      • Well, you will be trucking along once you are healed. I agree 2020 needs to be done. I have a couple of 2020 FU items in my shop. Selling the coffee mugs. People love it. I think we all feel the same. Feel better, my friend! The coastline will be there when you are ready! 🙂

      • YES!!! I’m a doer too. I like to watch TV at night, but during the day, it’s go go go! I started physical therapy for my knees yesterday and I’m sore today! Can’t believe I’m so out of shape and I’m active. It’s good to start it up. I did all my stretches this morning regardless of how sore I am today. 🙂

      • That’s exactly what I was thinking. Here I walk miles shooting wildlife in the ‘boonies’. And yet after this surgery I can hardly move 😳. The PT comes by twice a week now and beats me up LOL. Getting old is not for wimps !!!

      • The PT will be the best thing once the pain starts tapering off. You are going to be like a teenager again once you heal. Getting old is definitely not for wimps. The good thing for me is I still have the drill instructors screaming, “No Pain, No Gain”. Not sure if it is a curse or a blessing. LOL! 🙂
