SQUARES – Kinda Glad I’m not a Turtle

Nature is not always kind as I have stated in other posts. I give you most of the good that nature has to offer, but today you are getting a reality check. A reality that every living thing struggles to live in their own environment. This turtle got too close to a small alligator. As much as my heart wanted to save the turtle….well…look at those teeth. Sorry for the turtle.

As such, it wasn’t a photo opportunity I was going to let slide either. When I said small gator, it was about a 4-5 feet. Really not that big in terms of alligators in Florida. Because I zoomed in and this was happening at the edge of the road, the gator appears to be larger than it actually is.

This scene played out at Viera Wetlands in Viera, Florida. One of our favorite birding spots that just opened back up to foot traffic about a month ago. When they do open the roads to motorized vehicles, it is a wonderful leisure drive through 13 miles of nature along a dirt road. Spectators get to see nature doing what nature does. Otherwise, you can hike or bicycle the roads easily enough.

    • Thanks! Did you get a good look at those teeth? I wasn’t even scared or anything. I did have my boots on, Frank was right there and my gun was in the car. Besides, as long as there was a turtle in those jaws, he wasn’t going to bother me. πŸ™‚

  1. I saw a similar incident while living for a short while on the Tampa-Lutz, FL, border. Small lake in back of my two-bedroom, one story condo. Resident gator was a big one. When not sunning itself where it dang well pleased, it was looking for food. Unfortunately, for an unsuspecting turtle on the shore by my condo, the gator grabbed hold of the turtle in its mouth. It then submerged beneath the water’s surface. After a good half-hour of watching, the gator surfaced sans the turtle. Lest we never forget some facts about Mother Nature. A turtle is a turtle and does what a turtle does. An alligator is an alligator and does what an alligator does. Such is an undeniable aspect of life on The Third Rock.

    • Nature does what natures does and everyone has to eat! Eat or be eaten! You know when I was in the Corps, I had friends that were totally against it. “How could you shoot another human being?” Well, it’s not anything I ever wanted to do and thank goodness never had to do that, but I took the stance of “Shoot or get shot”! I think I’d rather not get shot. Thank you very much!!! πŸ™‚

    • LMAO! Texture is important in food! OMG! Like a good cookie. Soft in the middle with a little crunch to the outside. OH…I think I might make some cookie dough this weekend! Thanks Brian! πŸ™‚
