FOTD – Pitcher Plant

Close up of a Pitcher Plant which is a carnivorous plant.

The Pitcher Plant is a carnivorous plant, much like the Venus Flytrap. It catches and eats mosquitos making it the best natural bug zapper ever. The leaves are called pitfall traps that features a cavity filled with digestive liquid. This plant will lure flying and crawling insects by bribing them with nectar.

Believe it or not there’s an “International Carnivorous Plant Society.” Fascinating that a scientific body has taken on the job of telling the folks on The Third Rock about these plants, to include facts about the pitcher plant at the following link. https://www.carnivorousplants.org/

I need to plant a few of those on my back fence. Pretty and useful. Is it a vine?

No, it’s not a vine. It is a hanging plant, or at least the variety we have is planted in hanging baskets.

We purchased ours at the art mart (like a farmer’s market). Haven’t seen any for sell in a long time. ๐Ÿ™‚
