Song Lyric Sunday – Toes – Zac Brown Band

This week Jim Adams has prompted us with Ankles/Hands/Feet/Fingers/Toes/Wrists for this weeks Song Lyric Sunday. I chose a fun beachy song called “Toes” by the Zac Brown Band which was a commercial cross-over hit.

“Toes” is a song co-written by Zac Brown Bands lead singer Zac Brown, bass guitarist John Driskell Hopkins and songwriters Shawn Mullins and Wyatt Durrette. According to Brown, Durette called him at six o’clock in the morning during his 30th birthday vacation while in Key West with the idea for the song. This is such a great drinking song at the beach where a Georgia man is describing his trip to Mexico.

The video was directed by Darren Doane and was released on July 7, 2009 (my son’s 23rd birthday). The music video was shot in at Daniel’s Grocery off of Pilgrim Mill Road in Forsyth, George and Lake Lanier northeast of Atlanta. Far from Mexico, but isn’t that what filmmakers do?

“It’s epic. It’ll definitely be memorable – land, air and sea vehicles of all kinds, and the introduction of a character named Floaty Boatwood. He’s kind of a lovable, dirty Georgia kind of guy. He’s the main character in the video, but there’s some great cameos, too.” Zac Brown

“Toes” Fun Facts

  • Third consecutive single to reach the Top 5 on U.S. Billboard Hot Country Songs chart
  • Second song to reach #1 for Zac Brown Band
  • Third consecutive single to peak in the Top 30 on the Billboard Hot 100.
  • Certified platinum by the RIAA on February 22, 2010.
  • Currently has 3x Platinum certifications
  • Lyrics were controversial and most radio stations replaced the lines “ass in the sand” to toes in the sand…”roll a big fat one” wasn’t very accepting at the time either. Sirius don’t play that game. You get the original lyrics. However, so much has changed in the last 10 years that you sometimes you will hear the original lyrics on FM.
I got my toes in the water, ass in the sand
Not a worry in the world, a cold beer in my hand
Life is good today, life is good today
Well, the plane touched down just about three o'clock
And the city's still on my mind
Bikinis and palm trees danced in my head
I was still in the baggage line
Concrete and cars are there own prison bars like this shit I'm living in
But the plane brought me farther
I'm surrounded by water
And I'm not going back again
Got my toes in the water, ass in the sand
Not a worry in the world, a cold beer in my hand
Life is good today, life is good today
Adiós and vaya con Dios
Yeah I'm leaving GA
And if it weren't for Tequila and pretty senoritas
I'd have no reason to stay
Adiós and vaya con Dios
Yeah I'm leaving GA
Gonna lay in the hot sun and roll a big fat one
And grab my guitar and play
Four days flew by like a drunk Friday night
As the summer drew to an end
They can't believe that I just couldn't leave
And I bid adieu to my friends
'Cause my bartender she's from the islands
Her body's been kissed by the sun
And coconut replaces the smell of the bar
And I don't know if it's her or the Rum
I got my toes in the water, ass in the sand
Not a worry in the world, a cold beer in my hand
Life is good today, life is good today
Adiós and vaya con Dios
A long way from GA
Yes and all the muchachas they call me Big Poppa
When I throw pesos their way
Adiós and vaya con Dios
A long way from GA
Someone do me a favor and pause for the Jaeger
I'll grab my guitar and play
Adiós and vaya con Dios
Going home now to stay
The senoritas don't care-o when there's no dinero
Yeah, I got no money to stay
Adiós and vaya con Dios
Going home now to stay
(Come on prop it up by the lake)
With my ass in a lawn chair
Toes in the clay
Not a worry in the world a PBR on the way
Life is good today
Life is good today

Great song Lisa, it brings back a lot of memories for me of having my ass in the sand. I used to have a timeshare in Key West and I spent two weeks there every Summer.

More than one band has the right to sing about tropical vacations. Buffett can’t hoard all of them! 😉
