CEE’S BLACK AND WHITE PHOTO CHALLENGE – In the Kitchen

Items used for canning back in the old days.

Then

The feature image is included in this gallery as well. I’ve provided you with some then (back in the day) and now kitchen item. These items from yesteryear are on display in the Fort Christmas, Florida museum. The thing is, many of these items were in my grandmother’s kitchen and still in use in the 70’s when I was a kid. She did have a gas stove as far as I can remember, but her old stove was in the smokehouse out back out of commission. My grandmother was a big canner. She canned all kinds of vegetables from their 1 acre garden to get them through the winter.

Many kitchens had a baking station with wooden rolling pins & a pastry cutter.

Canning was a means of survival back in the day. I can Strawberry Freezer Jam every year.

Now – In My Kitchen

Modern refrigerator plus freezer. The unit is two separate units that go together. They measure 72" across.
Modern convenience! Full size freezer on the left, full size refrigerator on the right. Measures 72″ across.
Utensils, mostly spatulas in a crock on the counter.
Must have utensils!
Pantry filled with canned goods, graham crackers, condiments and Blow Pops.
Canned goods in case of a hurricane. Guess we need to stock up!

Of course I have a bird toothpick holder! Would you expect anything less? You may be wondering why my engraved cutting board has a big “G”. It’s because Frank’s last name is Good. I never changed my last name when we got married. We are coming up on our 4th wedding anniversary as you can see. The other photos is my bowl of onions and our grains & nuts in the background.

    • Um…yes we did. When we remodeled the kitchen in 2011, we had the space built in when Frank found the units at Sears. It couldn’t have worked out better. We love them! πŸ™‚

    • Thanks Margaret! I wasn’t on much yesterday. We had tornadic thunderstorm. I had to unplug for several hours. I’m back on today catching up. Those fruit stood out in the color photo so they naturally called to me. LOL! πŸ™‚

  1. Love those old timey kitchen photos. I know my grandma and my mom always canned fruits and vegetables every summer.
Such a cute little bird toothpick holder! πŸ™‚

    • I know. Doesn’t it remind of what could have been and once was? I remember my grandma had an old icebox in the kitchen but it was used for storage. I’m talking about the one that took a block of ice. LOL! I don’t know where I found that toothpick holder but I just love it. πŸ™‚

      • Thanks for asking! I’m hoping the romance is out by the end of April (maybe even mid-April), and I’m closing in on the end of the first draft of the sequel to Mayhem. Still have to figure out some of the finer points, but I’m nearing the end. Then comes the β€œfun” part: editing. Makes me want to curl up in the fetal position.

      • Wait, are you writing two books? Editing is almost an endless pain! I’ve been writing things in my notebook for my books as I get them, but not actively writing the chapters yet. Working on the outline for the first book and scenes for both. πŸ™‚

      • I’m writing the sequel to Mayhem and revising the romance as my editor sends her suggestions. It’s a good trade off. When I get stuck on the sequel I can work on the revisions.

      • I too the weekend off to read a draft of a friend’s book. I’m loving it, but I’m itching to get back to writing.

      • It is amazing how reading another book, even if it is to edit it gets the juices flowing for your own work. I’m back to reading on a regular basis and it is helping me with writer’s block. πŸ™‚

      • Absolutely. I woke up at 5 this morning and had to write something down. I fell back to sleep and overslept until 8. Hard times get going today. 😊
