Song Lyric Sunday – “You Send Me” SAm Cooke

This week Jim Adams has prompted us with Give/Get/Receive/Take/Send for this weeks Song Lyric Sunday. Today I have chosen an oldie but goodie performed on American Bandstand, 61 years ago on March 14, 1959.

Written and performed by Sam Cooke, “You Send Me” was released by Keen Records as a single in 1957 and was Cooke’s debut single. His career took off after Specialty Records (a gospel label) released him from his contract because they thought Cooke would alienate their fans with his songs. After the release, “You Send Me” sold over 2 million copies. It became #1 on both Billboard’s  Rhythm & Blues Records chart and the Billboard Hot 100. “You Send Me” stayed on the Hot 100 charts for 26 weeks. In April, 2010, it was ranked #115 in Rolling Stone magazine’s “The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time”.

Sam Cooke was only 33 years old when he was shot at the Hacienda Motel in Los Angeles, California on December 11, 1964 only months after the above interview with Dick Clark. Another legend who died too soon! Can you imagine what else he would have done even with the 30 Top 40 hits and some of the most popular songs of all time?

You Send Me
Darling, you send me
I know you send me
Darling, you send me
Honest, you do, honest, you do
Honest, you do, whoa
You thrill me
I know you, you, you thrill me
Darling, you, you, you, you thrill me
Honest, you do
At first I thought it was infatuation
But, woo, it's lasted so long
Now I find myself wanting
To marry you and take you home, whoa
You, you, you, you send me
I know you send me
I know you send me
Honest you do
Whoa-oh-oh, whenever I'm with you
I know, I know, I know when I'm near you
Mm hmm, mmm hmm, honest, you do, honest, you do
Whoa-oh-oh, I know-oh-oh-oh
I know, I know, I know, when you hold me
Whoa, whenever you kiss me
Mm hmm, mm hmm, honest you do
At first I thought it was infatuation
But, woo, it's lasted so long
Now I find myself wanting
To marry you and take you home
I know, I know, I know you send me
I know you send me
Whoa, you, you, you, you send me
Honest you do

  1. Hey cool – we picked the same song! It is such a good one, isn’t it. I liked the interview clip, and sorry to hear about how he died. I didn’t know about that.

  2. Sam had the smoothest voice, and this song highlights it. It’s an inexplicable tragedy. Not sure they ever solved the case on Sam’s murder, which is just as great a tragedy 😦
