The American Avocet is a large wading bird measuring 16-20 inches with a 27-30 inch wingspan. As observed in this photo, they spend a great deal of time foraging in mud flats and shallow water for crustaceans and insects. Their population seems to be stable with a bit of an upswing. Their migration takes them to almost every state in the lower 48 states in the US. While we captured the behavior of these & others on this day in the west, we are blessed by their presents in Florida during the winter months.

They are distinct with their upturned bill and their “V” shaped black & white wings. These are two breeding adults as noted by the deep orange feathered head. Watching these two strut around with their blue legs reminded me of two ballerinas prancing on stage in blue-gray leotards.
