Daily writing prompt
Which food, when you eat it, instantly transports you to childhood?

The food that takes me back to my childhood is an American cheese and mustard sandwich on white bread. Yep, something very simple. I never liked peanut butter and jelly. I didn’t like ham or mayo. I didn’t want tomato or lettuce or anything else on my sandwich. My mom would pack a cheese and mustard sandwich in my lunchbox with whatever else we had. Fruits, veggies, chips and a cookie. Nostalgically, I still eat a cheese and mustard sandwich on occasion. Mostly now, it is a veggie sandwich with cheese. Lots of yellow mustard and mayo! Palette has changed.

Speaking of cookies, the smell of baking sugar cookies instantly takes me back to being at my grandparents house in the country. I loved them as a kid and I still love them today. I think of my grandma sweating in the kitchen for long hours and I always wanted to be right under her thumb. She has been gone for 24 years now, but I still remember. While this is prompt 1976, it was the year I started baking sugar cookies with her. I was 11.

Was it the skinny Kraft presliced cheese? I remember it so well as well. And sometimes minced meat sandwiches.. what we called the big sliced bologna slices..big enough to cover the bread except for the corners.

Yes the pre-sliced individually wrapped Kraft cheese. I loved bologna too but fried and nothing else on the bread. I didn’t want any of these foods together. 😂

I don’t think I ever did bologna and cheese together, either. Did you call in minced ham? And we never ever had tuna salad. First time I tasted it was at a high school party where the mothers made it and heated it with cheese on a hamburger bun. I never ever ate fish yet I thought it was delicious. Haven’t had it since.

I didn’t like uncooked bologna. We didn’t call any deli meat minced anything. I like tuna salad but make it with albacore. I don’t want it heated and no cheese. I’m such a picky eater. 😂

My mom was/is a poor cook. There is very little food from my childhood that I would like to eat again!

My mom wasn’t a good cook either, but my grandma was the best.
