Nanday parakeet sitting on top of a Mangrove Tree

On our visit to Tampa for the New Year, we took a day trip to Fort De Soto Park in Pinellas County, Florida. Our bird of the day was the Nanday Parakeet. I had seen them in St. Petersburg before, but we were not birding then and had certainly not been counting them. I wanted this bird to add to my “Life List”. Within five minutes of pulling into the parking lot where you can pay for a ferry ride to Egmont Key Island, a flock of 28 flew over our car and landed on the beach. I could hear them long before I could see them. What a site! By the time I got my camera out and walked over to the vicinity, they were flying all over the place, taunting me to catch them if I could. They finally landed in this Mangrove Tree and this one perched up on top right nicely for me. Life bird # 343.

This adventure was in January before the world went into lockdown. We have gone on a few the past few weeks that have almost no one around. Yes, we have fun on all our adventures. 😊

Thanks. Yes are are difficult to get them to stay still long enough. I have a series that I shot in about 1 minute and then they were gone.

We don’t have them here in Jacksonville so we had to go find them down south near St. Petersburg.

They’re already spreading north here in the UK, quite extraordinary how they have adapted here

How unusual. They are a tropical bird. I guess they have adapted like the Canada Goose has here. 😊
