Mom’s Trickery

β€œI don’t like sweet potatoes”, John stated as he stuck out his tongue.

β€œThey’re good for you and will make you strong”, his mom told him.

β€œPopeye says spinach makes you strong”, John stated enthusiastically.

β€œPopeye also says, β€œI yam what I yam”, mom burst out laughing.

With a devious smile on her face, Mom turned towards the table, looking into John’s eyes and said, β€œI think he would want you to eat your sweet potatoes, get strong and build muscles like him, so in honor of Popeye, tomorrow night we’ll have spinach”.

John frowned at the thought. β€œYUCK”!

Thank you! I wanted to to make Popeye’s cackle, awe kekeke, but I wasn’t sure how to write it. LOL! πŸ™‚

John probably grew to love them as most kids don’t like veggies. My sister-in-law makes the best sweet potato casserole with this cinnamon pecan crumble on top. OMG! Delicious is an understatement. We usually have it at Thanksgiving but with covid, we didn’t get together and I didn’t get it. I wasn’t going to make a whole one for just us. πŸ™‚

Oh, that sounds delicious! There’s a sweet potato, cranberry, pecan cold salad at my grocerer’s deli that I love to get in the Fall. I wouldn’t dare make a batch I’d eat it all! 🀣

What does everyone have against spinach? If it isn’t overcooked or “creamed,” it’s great fresh or quickly steamed. Full of vitamin A and my favorite salad green. CANS of spinach are disgusting, but that’s because it’s so overcooked it’s more like protoplasm than vegetables. Now kale — unless it’s in soup, I can live forever without every going near it.

I love fresh spinach. I ate in my pesto pasta today. I make an excellent spinach lasagna. It’s so good that when I made if for Christmas dinner, my BFF’s husband asked me what kind of meat was in it. LOL!

Kids don’t like spinach so it fit the fictional story. Sounded real though so I’ll take it. πŸ™‚

Knowing mom, she already has fed it to him and he didn’t even know it. I make an excellent spinach lasagna, but you just can’t beat fresh spinach. I wouldn’t touch the canned stuff. πŸ™‚

No arguments from me about canned spinach… I don’t even think it should be called spinach after canning… agreed, fresh is best. πŸ˜‰

Thanks so much! Sweet potatoes and yams are kinda similar, even though yams are more like yucca but thought it would spin. Throw in the spinach and I had a veggie scene. LOL!

Good smiles for my Tuesday evening. Sweet potatoes may not be my favorite, but they are much better than cooked spinach … but I can think of ways I like spinach.
