This week Jim Adams has prompted us with choosing songs pertaining to Days of the Week for this week’s Song Lyric Sunday. I chose “Boondocks” by Little Big Town. This song is relatable to me! I was born in a small town in Texas and learned to play cards and dominos at a young age. When I stayed with my grandparents in the country on the weekends, we would get up and go to church on Sunday morning.
Every member of Little Big Town is credited with co-writing this song, plus Wayne Kirkpatrick, an American songwriter and musician. “Boondocks” was the first single from their second studio album The Road to Here. Originally the song was named “Waiting for the Sun to Go Down”. According to Karen Fairchild, one of the group’s members, “We kinda set it aside for a few days and then Wayne Kirkpatrick, one of the song’s co-writers came back.” Little Big Town decided to turn it into a Southern anthem. Kirkpatrick suggested changing the lyrics from “waiting on the sun to go down” to “I’m born and raised in the boondocks”. At that point the song was born. “Boondocks” is a song about being proud of your roots, even if they are humbling and poor. Welcome to the country, folks!

“Boondocks”
I feel no shame I'm proud of where I came from I was born and raised in the boondocks One thing I know No matter where I go I keep my heart and soul in the boondocks And I can feel That muddy water running through my veins And I can hear that lullaby of a midnight train It sings to me and it sounds familiar I feel no shame I'm proud of where I came from I was born and raised in the boondocks One thing I know No matter where I go I keep my heart and soul in the boondocks And I can taste That honeysuckle and it's still so sweet When it grows wild On the banks down at old camp creek Yeah, and it calls to me like a warm wind blowing I feel no shame I'm proud of where I came from I was born and raised in the boondocks One thing I know No matter where I go I keep my heart and soul in the boondocks It's where I learned about living It's where I learned about love It's where I learned about working hard And having a little was just enough It's where I learned about Jesus And knowing where I stand You can take it or leave it, this is me This is who I am Give me a tin roof A front porch and a gravel road And that's home to me It feels like home to me I feel no shame I'm proud of where I came from I was born and raised in the boondocks One thing I know No matter where I go I keep my heart and soul in the boondocks I keep my heart and soul in the boondocks You get a line, I'll get a pole We'll go fishing in the craw fish hole Five-card poker on a Saturday night Church on Sunday morning You get a line, I'll get a pole We'll go fishing in the craw fish hole (Down in the boondocks) Five-card poker on a Saturday night (sing a little prayer for me) Church on Sunday morning You get a line, I'll get a pole We'll go fishing in the craw fish hole (Down in the boondocks) Five-card poker on a Saturday night (sing a little prayer for me) Church on Sunday morning You get a line, I'll get a pole We'll go fishing in the craw fish hole (Down in the boondocks) Five-card poker on a Saturday night (sing a little prayer for me) Church on Sunday morning You get a line, I'll get a pole We'll go fishing in the craw fish hole (Down in the boondocks) Five-card poker on a Saturday night (sing a little prayer for me) Church on Sunday morning You get a line, I'll get a pole We'll go fishing in the craw fish hole (Down in the boondocks) Five-card poker on a Saturday night (sing a little prayer for me) Church on Sunday morning You get a line, I'll get a pole We'll go fishing in the craw fish hole (Down in the boondocks) Five-card poker on a Saturday night (sing a little prayer for me) Church on Sunday morning Source: LyricFind Songwriters: James Lee Westbrook / Karen Fairchild / Phillip Sweet / Kimberly Roads / Wayne Kirkpatrick / Kimberly Schlapman / James Westbrook Boondocks lyrics © Warner Chappell Music, Inc, Downtown Music Publishing

I don’t think that I have ever been to the boondocks, but I bet there are a lot of nice people there. Thanks for sharing this Lisa.

Yep you did see this. I’m so behind on everything!!! I’ve been like this for weeks. I can’t seem to catch up. It was wonderful coming from the humble country. Being financially poor wasn’t necessarily a bad thing. 😊

Thanks so much! I love the “5 card poker on Saturday night, church on Sunday morning”. Reminds me of my grandparents playing dominoes until late at night with friends. Then off to church the next morning. 🙂
