This week for Song Lyric Sunday, Jim Adams has prompted us with songs prompting us to use the following: Bottom/End/Middle/Side/Top
“Where the Sidewalk Ends” was the 10th song added to George Strait’s soundtrack album “Pure Country” in 1992 for the movie of the same title. It was Strait’s 13th studio album. It was the first soundtrack of Strait’s career and was his most commercially successful album that sold over six million copies. Written by Jim Lauderdale & John Leventhal. Great article from Taste of Country on this song and the songwriters here.
George Strait stars as a fictional country music singer named Dusty Chandler who finds himself fed up with the big production pushed on him by his manager rather than concentrating on the music. In the movie, Dusty realizes how unhappy he was while singing “Where the Sidewalk Ends” as he walks off the stage and disappears from the tour. His manager panics and puts in a replacement to perform to an unknowingly audience while trying to find him. While this movie was a commercial failure, the fact that you have one of the greatest country music singers at the helm, I have enjoyed it over and over and over again. The clip is from the movie at the moment Dusty chooses to seek what is in his heart.
Where the sidewalk ends and the road begins We said good bye on a cold dark night I'm not afraid to go you bet I'm not Where the sidewalk ends you left a lot Some people leave and never come back Some stay in touch, some loose track Your mind kept sayin' come on let's go You started learnin' what you don't need to know Where the sidewalk ends and the road begins I'll wait for you in the cold dark night You might come back, you had to go Where the sidewalk ends I'll never know Hide from the future run from the past I guess I'll stay here as long as I can last Whistle still blowin' but the train is gone Ain't no wheels gonna take me from my home Where the sidewalk ends and the road begins We said good bye on a cold dark night I'm not afraid to go you bet I'm not Where the sidewalk ends you left a lot I'm not afraid to go you bet I'm not Where the sidewalk ends you left a lot Where the sidewalk ends and the road begins We said good bye on a cold dark night I'm not afraid to go you bet I'm not Where the sidewalk ends you left a lot Where the sidewalk ends you left a lot Where the sidewalk ends you left a lot Source: LyricFind Songwriters: Jim Lauderdale / John Leventhal Where the Sidewalk Ends lyrics © Downtown Music Publishing

It was on an album that was popular and being #10 with all the other hits, it lay in the shadows. I’m glad you liked it. 😊

I get that. So you still didn’t decide on a computer?

Not yet. I’m all talk and no action 😂. It’s hard to decide with all the options out there. I’m on the fence about an all-in-one. Until I can be more sure, I’m muddling through on phone and iPad.

Lisa that slider was an interesting way to show the lyrics. I enjoyed all the energy in this song, great singing and nice sounding instruments.

The movie is a little cheesy but I loved it. Cheese is best when critics don’t like it. 😉

It’s good to know the background of the song and the movie. Makes it more special. Good choice, Lisa!

I was thinking this was inspired by the Shel Silverstein book by the same name. That was super popular when I was in elementary school, around the same time when this song came out. Nevertheless, the song is great. I love 90s’ Country!
