Today is for the Birds – Jan. 5, 2020

Since there is a “national day” for almost everything, I am happy to write about one of my favorite subjects: The birds! In honor of today, National Bird Day, I would like to share my top 5 birding posts of 2019.

I would also like to introduce you to the Jacksonville Business Connection where my first blog “Unlock the Bird Lover in You for 2020” was published a few days ago as a member of the Holmes Content Team.

Just since January 1, 2020, Frank & I have logged 71 new species to our log and counting for the new year. Can’t wait to see what is in store for 2020!

What is it about a cardinal that awakens my soul? Such terrific color and shape! I am a very amateur bird appreciator. I look forward to more photos and bird-related info in future posts. I do have a song inspired by the heart-breaking declines in bird populations that I am working on which I hope to share in some future blog post. I was shocked to learn that one of the biggest killers of birds in the USA is/are household cats who are allowed out of doors! Sadly that is what our family did during my entire childhood. But now my mother keeps her cat inside — while feeding the birds outside. We need all parts of our planet’s ecosystems to remain functioning and intact if human beings are going to continue to be part of life on planet earth…

The cats help keep the rodent population down as long as the population isn’t feral. Plenty of birds are preyed upon by other birds. That is probably a more dire problem for songbirds than the cats. I don’t have cats but I have neighbors with them. They are spade and well fed. I’m glad they are around for the mice & rats. I would love to hear your song. Our planet is in trouble. We are in crisis actually.

Hi, again, Lisa. I just enjoyed reading your article about bird-watching opportunities in the Jacksonville area. However, none of the links to your top five birding posts worked for me (I was sent to a draft page for starting a new blog post…) Your photographs are WONDERFUL!!!

I will check on it. Each should be linked to those posts. They were working. Gotta love WordPress. Thanks for the compliment.
