Here is my entry for Granny Shot It’s Β Bird of the Day (BOTD)Β challenge.

This was day 9 of our vacation and it was our birding day. We saw a lot of birds while on our trip to Yellowstone & Grand Tetons, but none of those days were dedicated to just hiking & birding. On this day, we saw several life birds (will be featured on other bird of the day posts). The Northern Flicker was not a life bird, but this is the best photo of one that we’ve ever gotten. This beautiful bird is part of the woodpecker family & is 11-12 inches in length (28-31 cm).

We were exploring and heading down one of the trails at Glen Lake Rotary Park in Bozeman, MT when we spotted an opening to a very green patch of grass. Turned out to be a public golf course. We walked around the edges where the woods and the pristine maintained lawn was as to not disturb the golfers. It was a beautiful sunny Sunday, so there were players scattered from the tee boxes to the greens & in between.

I circled around this pond observing 9 mallards. I wasn’t paying attention to anything else until I looked up. Frank & I saw this Northern Flicker up in the tree about the same time. This image is the result of Frank’s master photography. I can only take credit for spotting this magnificent species. The Northern Flicker is found in every state in the lower 48 states in the US, Alaska & Canada.

Even if they are considered “common,” I find flickers uncommonly beautiful, especially when they spread their orange wings! Nice photos!

Lisa, this is one of my favorite birds! I’ve tried several times to take a good pic, but no luck. These are amazing! πŸ“ΈπŸ€—πŸ“Έ
