Here is my entry for Granny Shot It’s Water Water Everywhere (WWE) challenge.
Waves came in just ahead of Hurricane Dorian at American Beach on Amelia Island this Labor Day. All the Florida State Parks were closed between Jacksonville & Fernandina Beach. NO BBQ…NO BOATS…NO ACTIVITY! HAPPY LABOR DAY!
So, we headed to Amelia Island & found that Burney Park next to historic American Beach was open. There were a few humans, an assortment of birds & a gopher tortoise (whom I named Dorian). The storm had not cleared the Bahamas at the time the photo & video were taken. The rough surf was not a product of any bands coming from the storm but a strong Northeast push that seemed to follow the rotation of the storm. It’s always amazing how everything in nature is so connected and how this push of clouds and wind seemed to be part of a storm 5oo miles away. It was quite breezy & absolutely beautiful.
The history of American Beach is summarized on the Florida Heritage Landmark sign below. After reading the landmark below, please look up the history of American Beach. It’s a great read and a true testament to the American Spirit. The fight for freedom and equality in the Jim Crow era of our history is all here. To be able to enjoy nature and this historic wonderful beach as a diversified nation is a true treasure. There’s something spiritual about walking where great American history took place and is still alive today. American Beach was added to the U.S. National Registry of Historic Places in 2002.
