Here is my entry for Granny Shot It’s Bird of the Day (BOTD) challenge.
Perdue Pond used to be on our schedule of birding hot spots in North Jacksonville near the airport. We would find all kinds of waterfowl. Depending on the time of year, we would see Gadwall, American Wigeon, Mallards, Mottled Ducks, Domestic Geese, Redheads, Buffleheads, Pied-Billed Grebes, Northern Pintails, Blue-Winged Teal, American Coots, the rare American Black Duck that took up residence for a few years and of course the Canada Goose. Several years in a row, we observed a Snow Goose flying over in the winter. However, in recent trips this past winter and spring, there was not a single bird on the pond. I have to wonder why?

Very nice! On a somewhat related note, I just read that Alabama is issuing permits to shoot sand hill cranes. 😢😢😢

I just read that too. They are slow to come back. They are residents here & have been in decline due to “progress”. Guess they migrated west to their death. Florida needs to implement a goose season for the Canada goose. I suppose when their numbers get higher, they will have to do something about the population. Maybe that will be my BOTD for tomorrow.

When we lived in Melbourne the cranes were fairly common. The first day in our new house the cat about a heart attack when she spied one from our back door. I think she was ready to move back to Kansas where the birds were of a manageable size.

I love Melbourne. Have you ever been to Viera Wetlands? One of my future blogs will be on that awesome sanctuary for birds.

Lisa, if you ever head my direction (Tallahassee-ish) during the late winter months, there’s a place called Birdsong near Thomasville, GA, that plays host to many migrating birds. http://www.birdsongnaturecenter.org/ I think you’d enjoy visiting there. It’s one of my favorite spots.

I went to Thomasville, GA a couple of years ago in December with my sister-in-laws & a friend. It was a girls day out. We went on a food tour in the historic district. It wasn’t a birding trip, but I was on the lookout the whole day we were there. The trip was more about being together, the history of the town, the food & shopping. I plan to go again with Frank & the nature center is right up our alley. Girl….we gonna get together. Too many intersecting parts here!

I agree. I live about 30 mi. south of Thomasville. It’s one of my favorite places.
